This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The right kind of books can ignite a student's curiosity and imagination. "Rocket Boys," which you may know as "October Sky," is just the book to catch my students' attention and draw them into reading.

My high school students are nice kids from nice families, but living in not-so-nice neighborhoods.

Here, it takes more than the usual amount of drive and determination for kids to succeed. Their parents, however, absolutely will not, and cannot, provide any extras (or often, even the basic necessities.) Our school lacks sufficient grade-level reading for high-schoolers. We especially need more nonfiction books that are relevant for students who are interested in math and science. And we definitely need more books about young men coming up in the world. But as you have probably read elsewhere, there are no funds to purchase such books. I have that book, in "Rocket Boys."

My Project

This book is about the adventure of growing up in America, during an era when we were rediscovering the value of an education that focused on independent thinking, and the scientific mind. "Rocket Boys" introduces my students to the idea that real-world science, mathematics, and experimentation is fun, and within reach. Books like these are extremely hard to find, and these days nearly impossible to fund.

I am an English teacher.

Without your help I cannot get my hands on sufficient copies of nonfiction books that are relevant for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. If my students are going to have these books, it will be a direct result of generous benefactors, like you!
