My students believe their food comes from only the grocery store. They don't understand how food is grown and how it makes it to the grocery story. Raised bed gardening will allow my hands-on classroom to learn to grow their own vegetables and to learn about sustainable gardening.
The students in my classroom love coming to school.
They are safe when they walk in the door. It is the first place they learn they can have a voice and they are smart. They learn to come up with solutions to problems, they learn there is a lot to explore and they love learning about that world.
My students come from a very stressed environment. They are from low income homes, many not having one or both parents around. Many have never had the opportunity to express themselves, whether it be who they are or what they want to learn. When the kids come into my classroom they learn to explore different things and they learn it is okay to make mistakes. They begin to understand that learning can come from the mistakes they make. By the end of the year, they know they are smart and they have the confidence to be able to learn no matter the situation.
My school is in one of the most economically depressed areas of my state. Despite all of the obstacles, the teachers are excited about help
My Project
Students will be growing vegetables. They will begin the process by starting plants from seeds placed in baggies. The students will then learn how to transplant the vegetables to the raised bed when the plants are large enough. Caring for the plants until they produce vegetables will be the responsibility of the students. The students will also learn how to grow vegetables from cuttings as well. We will watch and document the growth of the plants and when the time is right, we will harvest the vegetables and enjoy them with a tasting party.
This project will go beyond the standards the students must master.
They will learn about plants, the parts of the plants, and how those parts work together. But beyond that they will learn how they can produce food for themselves. They will learn how they can eat more healthy and make better choices about what they eat.
