My Students

Have you ever had to share one bathroom among eight people while trying to get ready for a big event? It takes forever, doesn't it? Well, my students often have to share a handful of beakers, graduated cylinders, and two mass scales among classes of up to thirty-three students!

My students are a great group of very curious, very capable high school students from New York.

They show great passion and enthusiasm for their Biology, Chemistry, and Physics classes. Many of our students come from low-income households. Our school is a specialized public high school that focuses on providing them with a well-rounded, challenging education. Each of our juniors and seniors is enrolled in college-prep level coursework across each of the subject areas. To that end, their science coursework requires them to conduct sophisticated experiments, which requires them to be able to demonstrate professional-grade experimental measuring techniques and procedure.

My Project

The materials that I am requesting will go a long way toward enhancing my students' educational experiences. Currently, our shortage of materials inhibits the speed with which my students can carry our their experiments. Also, having to share a handful of materials across large classes shifts student focus away from learning the intended content and skills. Instead, students often get distracted with having to wait for long stretches for measurement equipment to become available. This causes our lab assignments to take much longer than they should, and decreases the number of meaningful lab experiments that we are able to carry out throughout the year. With these materials, my students can concentrate on the objectives of each experiment, and gain the necessary practice with legitimate measurement equipment they'll need as they pursue scientific careers. We need scales, beakers and cylinders to conduct experiments.

The goal for our high school is to have every graduate attend college.

Many of our students have expressed interest in pursuing a degree in a scientific or engineering-related field. Having reliable access to common lab measurement equipment enables my students to gain important practice in working with the tools they will need as they pursue careers at both the collegiate and professional levels. They certainly have the passion and the ability to succeed. All they need now is the equipment!
