Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Science has the ability to excite and amaze students, but not all kids think they can DO science. Everyday I remind my students that science is all around them. I remind them that each of them has the skills and abilities to excel in the subject and improve their life and community with science.
I teach in an inner city, Title I school with a high minority population.
The students in my Women In Science & Engineering Club are 75% girls and 25% boys who are excited about doing science and engineering outside of the regular school hours. My students are hardworking and curious, but miss out on some of the traditional high school science experiences due to limited resources. Our W.I.S.E. group tries to change that.
My Project
My students need preserved cow eyes, frogs, sharks, and pigs to perform dissections as part of our Women In Science & Engineering Club Activities. The club was started with the hope of garnering the attention of at least 10 students and to our surprise over 50 students arrived at the first meeting. The club includes students from 9-12 grade. We will use the preserved specimens as part of a life science & forensic series of club meetings we will have. Over the course of the year, we will perform the dissections and by the end of the year be able to engage in a discussion about the human anatomy in comparison to the various specimens and comparing the different organisms to one another. Students will also learn the basic science skills of safety during dissection and the various tools needed for each organism. They will engage in the tactile experience of dissection while enacting the scientific method.
WISE club was started with the intention of providing a space after school where students could engage in meaningful activities while supporting a great cause.
It was inspired by female students who were interested in furthering their knowledge of engineering and science and further propelled by students both female and male who supported their interest. Donations to this projects will help further the message of WISE Club and remind our students that people support minorities and women in STEM.
