"I don't know how to read" is a phrase I hear a lot from my incoming first graders. Imagine if you could not read a book, or a menu, or perhaps even the holiday card you just received? Acquiring more books for our book room will help prevent that from ever happening to our students!
The school I teach at is in a rural/suburban area and is considered and Title I school due to a percentage of the school population qualifying for free or reduced lunch.
To qualify for free or reduced lunch, you have to be below the poverty line. Even with a portion of our students coming from impoverished homes, they are still fantastic kids with lots of spirit and character! Their parents have done wonderful jobs bringing them up with good values and a sense of community. The kids make my grateful everyday for the job I get to do each day.
My Project
We need more leveled readers to enhance our reading program and help our most at risk readers. We don't have a lot of lower levels in our book room. But why are leveled readers even important?
Leveled readers are imperative to teach guided reading. Guided reading is an instructional approach that has the teacher working with small groups one at a time. These small groups are generally working on the same skills and reading on the same reading levels.
Providing books to these students at their level (Leveled Readers) allows them to practice their skills and strategies, but still can have challenges to provide opportunities for problem solving. It is important that we build our book room's lower levels to ensure we make readers coming out of 1st grade.
If a student is not reading by the end of 1st grade it will take an enormous amount of interventions to get that student back on the path to success.
We want to be proactive instead of reactive. Providing more leveled readers for instruction will help with that! We want students to LOVE reading and become life-long readers. Starting their reading experience off with great adversities will only hinder this. Help us acquire more leveled readers to help our students succeed in reading and in life!
