My Students

"Love the writing, love the writing, love the writing . . . the rest will follow," Jane Yolen said. I want the children I teach to love writing. Writing is difficult for adults and daunting for children. I want children to enjoy writing and their journey to becoming independent writers.

I teach first grade in an Oklahoma school that values teaching to the multiple intelligences.

The children in my classroom enjoy writing but are overwhelmed by the process. Every child is working towards independence at their own rate as they learn how to write for real purposes.

My Project

The children in my classroom need dramatic play writing boxes, word pattern cards, sight word stamps, and number stamps so that they can practice writing and understand the importance of writing for real purposes. The dramatic play writing boxes will enhance our dramatic play center as children practice interacting with others and the purpose of writing in every day situations. Word pattern cards will give children the chance to work with words while they develop spelling independence. The sight word stamps will help them recognize the most familiar words written in text. The number stamps will give children the opportunity to practice writing numbers correctly. With your support, these materials will be purchased to engage and strengthen children's writing development. The materials will support children at their individual learning level.
