My students need a class set of atlases so that they can improve their world knowledge as they complete maps of each region that we learn about in world geography.
First thing every morning, we start out by watching CNN Student News. This allows my students to not only to be up-to-date with current events, but also gives us a chance to relate what we are learning about in Geography to what is happening in the world around us!
My school is a fine arts academy, so that says a lot about my students.
The atmosphere here is so different than any other place that I have ever been. Our students are more accepting, more compassionate, and they have a huge desire to learn. My favorite thing about my students is how much they support each other. This can mean from going to recitals, volleyball games, or even helping each other with classwork.
My students come from all walks of life, but that doesn't seem to matter to them. They truly admire each other's talents, and want to see each other succeed. I see this in all of my students, freshman and seniors alike.
Being a fine arts academy, I think my students are well on the road to being well rounded citizens when they graduate high school. Some of the classes offered to them include piano, martial arts, photography, art, ballet, guitar, stagecraft, show choir, and many more. My school is very much set up for every student to succeed both academically, and in life.
My Project
My students need a class set of atlases so that they can improve their world knowledge as they complete maps of each region that we learn about in world geography. Having a set of atlases is a crucial for Geography. My students will be able to use them as reference materials whether they are drawing maps of a region, or simply want to know where an event on the news is happening. A set of atlases will give my students the opportunity to physically see the location in which we are referring in relation to where they live. I believe it helps students think about what we are studying in real life terms instead of just theoretical.
An example of a project I would like to do using the atlases is to have each student choose a country to make a brochure to advertise why it would be awesome to live in that country. Part of the requirements would be to look at the surrounding countries, and see what they might offer in terms of tourism, or vacation destinations. If students have easy access to an atlas, they will be able to get this information, whether or not they have Internet access at school or home.
Donations for an atlas set will greatly improve my classroom.
Students will be able to learn the skills of reading a traditional map, instead of simply using Google maps on their phones. The ability to locate the areas that we are discussing will help students grasp the big picture of geography. Overall, it will better their grasp of geography.
