Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

"I'm ready to return to school for a second chance at my high school diploma, but..." My students typically start off their first days in our program full of excuses as to why they might not succeed in their quest for a diploma. One of the main reasons we hear is that students get frustrated easily and have trouble following along, either because they lack basic skills or they have vision problems, or both. Because they have difficulty following along with instruction, they miss out on a chance at success. I teach young adults, ages 16-25, who did not complete their high school diploma when they were initially enrolled in high school. They have voluntarily chosen to come back to school to work towards graduation. Students enter at all different levels, so essentially our school is a composite of 9-12 graders, depending on how many credits they have received in the past.

Our students enter our program very motivated, but also very wary. They have not succeeded in the past and are hesitant about obstacles they may encounter. They are used to taking a back seat instead of taking charge of their education. This means if there is a concept they don't understand or even if it's something as simple as not being able to see the board, they do not always speak up. Our school is housed in one room meant for a business, so visibility of teacher notes can be an issue.

Having the ability to project notes, PowerPoints and videos, at the very least, will help our students in a number of ways. First, the issue of being able to see will be solved because the projection can be sized appropriately. Second, using this sort of technology automatically generates student interest because they are exposed to multimedia presentations and concepts can be taught in a variety of interesting ways. Third, students themselves can become adept at creating and giving presentations of final projects while learning how to use one type of technology all at the same time.

With your help, our students who have failed in the past can succeed this time around, be it their second, third or fourth attempt at a high school diploma. Not only will they will be able to follow along with lectures more easily and learn to give their own presentations, they will be learning required skills for succeeding in college or in the business world. Having the ability to follow along during a presentation, take notes and, of course, learning how to speak publicly while using a piece of modern technology to their advantage, is one of the most important gifts we can give them. By helping us acquire what is today considered to be basic technology in the classroom, our students will know that their success matters to us and to their community.
