My Students

My educational philosophy is that every child deserves an exceptional education, regardless of where he or she grows up. I currently work in an inner-city public school in Chicago, IL where I teach a self-contained classroom for students with special needs, ranging from the 2nd – 4th grade.

My students are energetic second, third and fourth graders with varying learning disabilities, cognitive delays and emotional/behavioral disorders.

As a second-year teacher, I am constantly inspired by the unharnessed potential I sense in my students. Therefore, I spend every day trying to enrich their learning experiences by exposing them to a variety of kinesthetic and enriching activities outside of the curriculum.

My Project

Recently, our school was broken into and several classrooms were vandalized and robbed. My students suffered the loss of our two classroom computers, which were donated to my students just a year ago. Because my school is located in one of the poorest Congressional districts in the country, we have extremely limited resources. Therefore, my school does not have the funds to replace any of the damaged or stolen property. A set of student-friendly laptops would launch my classroom into a new realm of possibilities. By exploring interactive websites, games, activities, lessons, movies and other types of alternative media, my students will be better prepared for the 21st century. My students would be able to once again access the wealth of information available through technology. Additionally, laptops offer the added benefit of portability and security. I could easily take them home with me each night, or lock them securely in my closet at the end of each day.

Please help undo the damage that was done to our classroom, our school and our community.

By replacing our stolen classroom computers, my students will learn that no obstacle is too great to overcome. Too often, children in impoverished neighborhoods are left behind, and with the technology boom that trend has accelerated. You will give my students a chance to continue to flourish even amid difficult (but not impossible!) circumstances.
