Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you recall writing? I remember dreading it as a child. We were given a prompt to write to & told to write. Writing doesn't have to be like that. It can be a fun, magical time of the day. It means teachers use books and other children's writing to showcase what authors do that captivates us.
My students are 3rd grade boys and girls that attend a public school.
The vast majority live in poverty. They work hard though, and continue or come to love learning in our class. By building classroom community and an environment where questioning and curiosity are encouraged, the children flourish.
My Project
This year I am really focusing on improving how I teach writing. It can be the highlight of the day for students, when taught well. This means using more mentor texts, or books that showcase specific skills that authors use to enchant readers. It means using mini-lessons to model a specific writing trait or other lesson, and allowing students to write, write, write, while we as teachers spend time conferring with individuals or small groups of students who need a boost in a specific area.
I am asking for a variety of books which highlight things writers do to make their writing interesting, from showing something instead of merely telling about it, choosing descriptive words, strong leads that hook readers, and so forth. I'm also asking for some wonderful dictionaries that are just the right level for our students. The writing folders I'm requesting, encourage children to go through the writing process, and the nonfiction books will be used for students to do animal reports.
Many of our students don't see writing modeled on a regular basis.
As such, it is ever so important that we do a phenomenal job as educators to show them how fun and possible it is for them be authors. When children hear wonderful books read to them, acquire new strategies, and come to notice the structures and tricks writers use to write beautiful books, they are excited to write! They enjoy trying out these strategies & seeing their writing blossom.
