Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Have you ever been the first to discover an exciting new book? I would like to give my students the opportunity to read, think, and share their thoughts about a newly published novel.
Over 1,000 students attend our public middle school, and most of them qualify for free or reduced-price meals.
My classes are made up of former and current English Language Learners in 7th and 8th grade.
A priority in my teaching is to expose my students to interesting and appropriately challenging literature, so despite the norm at their age, many of them are enthusiastic about reading.
My Project
This book, Fair Coin, was just published last month by up-and-coming Young Adult author, E.C. Myers. It has been compared to Scott Westerfeld's Uglies, a book that my students enjoyed in an earlier unit of study. If we are granted a class set of Fair Coin, my students would be able to improve their critical thinking about texts, through questioning and discussion of a novel not one of them has read before.
This project would allow me to keep up the momentum I have built this year in having my students discover, interpret, discuss, and evaluate new literature.
They would be further encouraged to seek out and discover new books!
