My Students
Where would our world be today without the innovative thinking of scientists, mathematicians, technologists, and engineers? What if the next big discovery is locked in the brain of an elementary student who struggles with Attention Deficit Disorder?
It is difficult to describe the students I teach in a small paragraph due to the diversity and uniqueness of each child.
At this elementary school, I work with all of the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th graders. This is a total of about 500 students. With each student possessing an inimitable personality and set of skills, it seems impossible to describe them all in a few short sentences. However, one thing all of these students has in common is their potential. They have the potential to grow, change, and learn. Sadly, due to the low economic status in which these students live, materials are not easily acquired.
My Project
With arts and crafts supplies, such as the Crayola Washable Paint Brush Pen Set, burlap remnants and glitter glue pens, the students in my classroom will be able to engage in project-based learning. In an educational world that still operates as if it is in the industrial revolution, we want to encourage our students to think. By assigning the students in collaborative learning groups, they will be encouraged to use team-work to solve problems. One of the project-based learning activities my students are hoping to complete is one that integrates science, engineering, and technology. The students will research an animal and specifically make note of the habitat of the animal. Upon completion of the research, the students will be asked to create a habitat for their animal. The students will have to work together to determine which supplies they need and how they will build the habitat. The students will engineer the habitats in their teams.
For the first time in their lives, the students at this elementary will be able to use their diversity as an advantage.
Rather than sitting in a classroom and being expected to sit quietly and work the students will be exposed to life in the real world, where people work together to solve real life problems. The students will learn skills that will follow them throughout their adult lives, such as teamwork, problem solving, and critical thinking.
