Help us make the most of our school garden. The last three years my students have helped build our garden from the ground up. Now we have food to harvest but need a place to do it. We want to expand our garden to include a work station for food prep and a sink for cleaning our harvest.
My students are part of a three year program aimed at students interested in careers in environmental industries.
They helped write the grant that allowed for us to have garden in our urban public school. The majority of the students receive free or reduced lunch. Prior to the building of our garden, few of the students had ever eaten fresh food from a garden or had ever learned about sustainable agriculture.
My Project
Our current garden includes six raised beds and a number of fruit trees. We have been very lucky this year to successfully grow a number of crops including: kale, strawberries, chard, beets, and lettuce. The problem has been that we have no where in our garden to prepare our food for sharing. We would like to have an outdoor sink so that we can wash our harvest and then a table for preparation. We envision being able to not only prepare our food outside but also use the materials for a number of science experiments.
We are all keenly aware of the importance of healthy eating and the issues involving teenagers making poor food choices.
A school garden is an excellent way to educate kids and help them see first hand how delicious and rewarding healthy eating can be. My hope with our school garden is that the lessons my students learn from growing their own food will be taken with them to college and in to adulthood.
