Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you enjoy viewing films and having stimulating discussions afterward? My high school English and Journalism students would greatly benefit from the opportunity to do this as they view the documentary, "Bully."

My students are resilient, inquisitive, and opinionated.

They attend a high needs school in Pennsylvania where issues such as staffing and funding sometimes impact the amount of trips they are able to take, and various other opportunities for extracurricular enrichment. However, many of our students continue to give their best academically, and inspire me every day. A number of our students also deal with very adult responsibilities such as parenting their own children, working long hours and caring for older or younger relatives.

My Project

Although many of my students have put on a tough demeanor, bullying is an issue some are forced to struggle with in silence, or unfortunately try to overcome through violence. We have been developing an online newspaper this year. Providing students with an opportunity to critique and review a film about such an important social issue will continue to fuel students' intellect and provide a catalyst for strengthening their writing abilities. After viewing the film students will be required to write an essay or article about the topic. They may also have the option of conducting video interviews.

Ultimately, being able to attend a screening of the documentary "Bully" will help my students have a broader perspective about what bullying can entail, and its ramifications.

Viewing this film will also give students an opportunity to critique, interview and develop film reviews for our paper. Hopefully, these students will be able to share an enriching experience with their peers through conversations and the written word.
