My Students

How would you feel if you had the worst handwriting in class? How would you feel if you just couldn't remember your letters...no matter how hard you tried? How would you feel if you saw your letters backwards?

My students are special education kids that need a little bit of extra help.

Many of them have fine motor and visual delays that effect the way they learn from early childhood. Our kids have diagnoses of autism, ADHD, ADD, learning disabilities such as dyslexia, dysgraphia, speech impairments, and other developmental delays. We are a public elementary school located in NY and we have different kinds of classrooms (such as special education classes) and services such as occupational, physical and speech therapy to help our children.

My Project

My students need to learn in different ways. Many of them are tactile learners, which means they learn by doing and touching. Sometimes just telling them, "This is letter A and this is how we write it", doesn't work. In addition, many of my students confuse uppercase and lowercase letters or see the letters backwards. For some reason, using technology such as the iPad captures their attention possibly because the iPad uses multiple sensory modalities simultaneously (auditory, vision and tactile). There are applications on the iPad that my students can use to learn how to form their letters by finger tracing on the tablet. Also music and video instruction captures their attention, so why not use technology to our advantage?

If we had an iPad, it would give my students a chance to learn in a fun and innovative way.

It would capture their attention. We would use it to help them learn their alphabet in a multisensory way. It would help them learn how to form their letters, the foundation for writing. The iPad would also give us the ability to view instructional videos from the Internet.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
