Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are Newcomers who have lived less than a year in the United States. I provide support of English language learning to the newest arrivals, many that have fled from their home countries as refugees. My students want to learn English quickly yet do not have supplies at home to learn.
My school is a wonderful haven of learning for newcomers.
Teachers gently guide students to speak, read, and write English. Some of children need additional support in addition to all that is given by the English as a Second Language teacher. My job as a support teacher is to provide the neediest children even more additional time and small group instruction. Many of these children lack the supplies to complete homework and academic practice to learn. My students are very motivated to learn, but confused as newcomers on how to obtain library cards, and lack the household funds of having basic school supplies. Our students are so happy to come to school to learn. The smiles on their face as they learn American culture, meet new friends after leaving old ones behind, and acquiring a new language fluently in one to two years makes our school a very special place.
My Project
Children will receive a School-To-Home Organizer homework folder. In the folder will be two leveled reading books that will be exchanged during the year for additional reading practice at home. Included in the homework folder will be flashcards of picture/words, and word cards will also be changed to meet the needs of individual learners. Classroom teachers can add their weekly homework. Children will be able to complete homework with supplies, crayons, glue, and scissors that are provided in the folders. Children will be able to complete homework given by the classroom teacher daily because they will have the supplies needed to complete assignments. With the requested leveled library books they will practice reading and vocabulary with flashcard sets. As students progress and master skills they will exchange books and flashcards for more challenging work.
My project will change the lives of my students by provide the basic supplies of a successful academic learner.
Students will be able to practice reading English print and, as they acquire more practice, they will be more proficient in fluency and English vocabulary.
