My Students

The school I teach at, is a Title 1 Renaissance school.

This means that over 90% of our student population qualifies for free or reduced lunch, indicating that many of our students come from low-income homes. Very few of my students attended preschool and many of them do not get educational support outside of the classroom. I have students that face a difficult life at home. The expectations of a Kindergarten are much more rigorous than they have been in years passed. My students work so incredibly hard and despite their setbacks, they are active, motivated learners that love expanding on their knowledge. For many of my students, school is the only place in which they are given access to a hot meal, positive role models and relationships and resources. I want school to be a fantastic place that my students love coming to everyday. I believe that I can use resources and materials to do that by making learning as fun and engaging as possible.

My Project

Developmentally speaking, children learn through play, especially at the age of 5. Knowing how my students learn and knowing the great strides many of my students need to be on grade level by the end of the year, I am hoping that these materials will assist us in reaching success. My hope is that these materials will keep them engaged in their Daily 5 centers while still providing them with meaningful instruction. The building words instant learning center, alpha pops, magnet letters and tub of letters will help them build their sight words and common CVC words. The Pop & Match will be used by students in a small group to help reinforce beginning, middle and ending sounds in CVC words. Students will also use the materials to strengthen their skills in phonemic awareness, rhyming and application of high frequency words. The headphones would be used with the CD player currently in our classroom for an interactive Listening Center.

I believe wholeheartedly that these materials will have a positive impact in the lives of my students.

They have such a thirst for learning and many of them face obstacles outside of that classroom that inhibit them from reaching their full potential. Helping my students to build on these basic skills will equip them with the tools they need to be successful readers throughout their entire life.
