My Students

"Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. INVOLVE ME AND I LEARN." [Benjamin Franklin] Our students are young, but they are already learning the technology skills that will be required for success in the 21st Century. We start teaching hands-on lessons with computers in Kindergarten!

I teach Technology classes to help all of our K-3 students keep pace and learn these necessary skills.

We are a New York City public school and nearly 60% of students qualify for free/reduced lunch. Our school's high poverty/high need classification has never stopped our students from doing their best. Over 90% of our grade 3 students performed at Level 3 or above on the NY English Language Arts and Math Assessments, reflecting continued strong performance even against higher testing standards. Our commitment to differentiated instruction supports students of all ability levels in every classroom by integrating: 1) English Language Learners (ELL students) 2) English as a Second Language (ESL students) 3) Students with Special Needs 4) General Education students Our diverse community is quite international with almost 70% of our students coming from homes where English is spoken as a second language. One-fifth of our students receive extra support for learning English.

My Project

It is hard to believe that the path to "college and career readiness" begins in Kindergarten, but we know the journey of learning will be a much less steep course if our students can gain essential technology skills during their early childhood education (Pre-K through 3rd Grade). Resources: (1) SMART Document Camera (13) Learning Keyboards (14) Small Computer Mice We are fortunate to have SMART Boards in our school, but are excited to optimize their potential with a document camera. The daily impact of this simple device will be incredible. It's like those clunky overhead projectors we grew up with, but now without the need for transparencies. Classroom sharing will skyrocket if we can project any book, photo or homework sheet! Color-coded keyboards & mice will accelerate basic computer skill learning for our younger students. A typical computer keyboard can be daunting for beginners, but the smaller-scale & easy color-coding will help our kids learn to navigate more quickly.

We need to provide basic technology learning blocks via frequent, individual, hands-on computer use for all students, but especially our students with special needs & ELLs.

Academic expectations have increased & our technology projects aim to help students learn to tie together their knowledge from all content areas. Early literacy skill development is integrated into all curriculum areas. The challenge of common core standards requires advanced planning & increased rigor to meet our goals!
