My Students

Something magical happens when I gather my precious first graders to the carpet and read to them. They listen ever so intently as I make the story come to life. I want to be able to give that magical experience to my students several times throughout the day, by using the TAG reading system.

I have 27 students in a Title 1 school in Michigan.

On the first day of school, I always ask my students what they want to learn in first grade. Each year I receive the same overwhelming response - these children want to learn to READ more than anything else. My first graders love being read to. When I reach the end of a book, it is common to hear them chant, “Read it again!” I want to expose them to as much high quality literature as possible to help them become exceptional readers who love to read! The TAG reading system will help make this dream possible.

My Project

The TAG reading system brings reading to life by taking students on an adventure with each turn of the page. Here’s how it works: Students hold the reading wand in their hands. As they point to the words on the pages, they hear the story being read to them. Each book has up to 17 learning activities that help build reading comprehension. I plan to use these books in our classroom Listening Center, during Reader’s Workshop. In first grade, we work very hard to help our young readers read fluently and with expression. The TAG readers will help the children read fluently by modeling how good readers read. This will help my first graders build their reading confidence, which is my ultimate goal!
