My students are lovely, wonderful, enthusiastic English language learners. Some are new to the country and have very limited English skills. Others are struggling to achieve mastery in English. As their ESL teacher, it is my responsibility to make sure that they are able to fully engage in learning.
But it's difficult to engage fully in learning reading, writing, math, social studies, and science when there is a language barrier.
My students speak 7 different languages other than English at home. We all work together to learn, but the learning process gets slowed down when we have inadequate tools. Worksheets, textbooks, and translation dictionaries aren't enough to teach students English.
My Project
An iPad is an innovative tools that can open the door to a world of possibilities for my students. We could use math programs like Xtra Math and Tenmarks that allow individualized learning for each student. We could download eBooks so that students can listen to and read along with books to improve their listening and speaking skills. We could use apps to make difficult science and social studies concepts more accessible. There are so many education apps available that if one tool isn't working, I could easily point students to another app that will give them more success. iPad technology will keep lessons moving at a fast pace. No more getting bogged down with translations! We could do sketches, look up words online for translation, and find photos for vocabulary. My students will be learning 21st century skills and English all at once! An iPad will greatly aid my students in learning English so that everyone can see them as the successful scholars that I know they can be.
Our ESL program relies heavily on the generous support of others to fund materials.
Many of my ESL students would never have access to technology like an iPad without your support.
