My students need the Arduino kit and Snap Circuits for simple circuitry concepts, Cubelets and Sphero to learn basic programming-both part of our Makerspaces project.
My Social Studies teacher often reminds her students "Big day today...lots to learn and do!" She is right. Our students are active and passionate about their learning. We want to create environments that nurture lifelong learners who skillfully solve problems while finding creative success.
Our students are thoughtful folk who study to be positive leaders in their school and community.
There are over 1200 academic minded students in sports, music, and performing arts. We see almost 200 of them daily in our library. They come in eager to be successful, enjoy the use of technology and collaborate on projects often.
They are proud of who they are and they support each other in their pursuit of success. The students want to learn and are ready to take an active role in their own learning. To assist them in this, we are creating a Makerspace in the library to encourage them to have their own opportunities to problem solve, question, build skills and create something meaningful. The tools we need will be an integral part of this project.
This space provides new opportunities for our students to learn skills, explore, team with the right community partners, ask the right questions and then find the resources to make something special. They are eager for just such a challenge
My Project
We are lucky to have a large successful Makerspace Communities (Tinkermill) near us and are nurturing our collaborative partnership in order to help our students learn and create. They have wonderful ideas and have shown that these kind of tools will be a natural way for our students to experiment, gain expertise and build skills while learning from and supporting each other.
The projects and resources will inspire students and encourage their creativity and wonder about how things work. It will allow for great experimentation and naturally link to expert instruction. We are confident that it will provide an incredibly strong foundation of learning that will morph "expert learners" into teachers. Showing others new skills or techniques-sometimes using webcasts, videos or even tweets. We anticipate this will launch some to identify particular things they want to learn next!
These tools in our students hands are sure to create a sense of wonder and insatiable excitement for learning
The donations will be an incredible boost to what we can offer students.
It will enable us to help higher levels of learning to occur in ways we can't currently achieve. Not only will our students know and explain complex content, but they will use this information to make new connections while sharing and collaborating with others.
We know our students can benefit richly from using these tools, teaching others about them and designing new ways to use them.
