My Students
Graphic novels are a fantastic way to get kids hooked on reading; in a world of iPhones and video games, I want them to see books as viable entertainment choices.
I am the librarian for two elementary schools, both filled with creative, fun kids who like to read.
When I arrived in the district a couple of years ago, I increased the number of books they're allowed to check out to "as many as you can read in two weeks." Circulation jumped from about 5,000 items/year to 7,000 at one school and nearly 9,000 at the other. I love when a book finds a champion, and word-of-mouth leads to a long holds list.
My Project
Right now, I do have long holds lists for the few volumes we own of the Babymouse and Squish series. Students who start these series want to continue them, but reach a stopping point at our libraries. I hate having to disappoint a kid ... it would be wonderful to point to an entire shelf full of the graphic novels they're excited about.
Many kids are reluctant to read long novels, but will happily pick up something with lots of pictures.
Jennifer Holm, author of Babymouse and Squish, has won Newbery Honors for her chapter books. I'm hoping that as younger readers make their way into the upper grades, their love for the graphic novels will encourage them to try Holm's more traditional literature.
