Mrs. Sweet from Williston SC is requesting a classroom visitor through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need to be exposed to writing for real purposes by a published author who will help improve literacy skills.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Our students begin the day with a high-five, the Pledge of Allegiance, a moment of silence, and a positive thought. Many of our students have not yet discovered the wonder of writing to connect to the world around them. This author visit could open up a world of opportunity for our students.
Our Title I school serves 237 students and has a 87% free/reduced lunch population.
Our school is located in a very small rural town in South Carolina. While our community is very proud of their heritage, many of our students have never had an opportunity to venture outside of our small town limits. Most of our students have very little access to books in their homes and most have never had an opportunity to meet a real author.
Dr. Crystal Ball O'Connor is the author of three highly acclaimed children's books, and is in great demand for her writing instruction, professional development, and author visits. She has enjoyed hundreds of school engagements in South Carolina, and she returns to many of the schools year after year. Her mission is to improve children's literacy skills, and her books and programs share the themes of preserving and protecting the gifts of family, literacy and nature. Dr. O'Connor will also help us engage our families in meaningful reading activities during Family Literacy Night. We hope to instill in our community a love for reading and writing together as families.
Our students are hungry for the opportunity to learn about the world around them.
Bringing in speakers from outside of our community exposes our students to a world of opportunities beyond our town limits and helps our students dream big.
