My Students

Imagine standing in front of a classroom of teenagers who WANT to read the books their friends are reading, but can't because the reading level is too hard for them. It breaks my heart every day to see them struggle to keep up with others when there are perfectly good tools out there to assist them.

I teach special needs high school students in an extremely low-income district in Michigan.

My students face major obstacles every day before they even come to school. Most cannot afford to buy food for themselves, so purchasing this type of technology on their own is out of the question.

My Project

If given the opportunity to listen to an audio book on these digital players, my special needs students will be able to interact with their peers in class on a whole new level. Instead of sitting and pretending to read with their friends, they will be able to actively participate in their discussions! Many of them will actually finish a novel for the first time in their entire lives. These kids deserve this feeling of accomplishment, and it will go a long ways towards building their self-esteem.

Due to extreme budget cuts that have reduced our department funding to near zero, we cannot afford to purchase these digital players on our own.

We need your help to bring these novels to life for our students!
