Help An Urban Art Room Grow

My students need craft paper rolls for murals/bulletins, cutting boards for paper arts, 25 Scholastic Magazine subscriptions for literacy in art class, watercolor crayons and sketchbooks.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are entering year 2 of art at my school and I can't wait to get back in the classroom! I know my students are excited to return also, and they will be so excited to have art in a different art room this year; one with a little more space for all their art to be stored and for them to move around.

I teach at an urban K-8 school in Philadelphia.

The school is Title 1, and part of a district suffering from major cutbacks and funding issues. My students all come from low socioeconomic status households and all receive free lunch at school. Due to the districts financial issues, I am not provided a budget for my classroom, and since last year I have spent a lot of my own money and raised other donations as well to help provide art materials and furniture for my classroom. All students, no matter what their background or where they live deserve an equitable chance at education and art education! It breaks my heart that my students enter the classroom at a disadvantage to no fault of their own. These kids are bright, creative, and excited to learn more in the arts. No matter what struggles they face at home, they still wake up and come to school everyday! They are stronger than they know, and deserve so much more than they are handed. My students hold so much promise and potential!

My Project

With the requested paper rolls my students will be able to help create colorful and engaging bulletin displays. They also will be able to create murals, and life size silhouette portraits. The paper will also be useful in covering tables to protect them during painting or other messy sessions. The rack to store the paper will be helpful in accessing the paper and storing it neatly and carefully. The cutting boards will be used for choice based art activities when students need a surface to cut on so my table is protected. Last year we tried using cardboard, and it made cutting complicated and still went through to the table. The Scholastic Art magazine will be used to help increase literacy in the art room, while also exposing students to new artists and art ideas/content. The sketchbooks will be used for the next class moving up in grade, so that all my 3rd-8th grades students have books. Lastly, the watercolor crayons will be used in many ways to create bright and colorful artwork.

Donations to my project will help improve my classroom by putting the materials my students need to continue their art experience in their hands!

The art room uses lots of consumable products, and my class needs help refreshing our supplies. Having art last year for the first time made a huge impact on my school and students. Helping us to continue our art projects will also bring further positive changes to my community by promoting self expression and acceptance of each individual idea.
