Do you know the joy of a well-stocked bookshelf? Help set my students free from assigned reading and give them the power to choose their own books.
My students are 11th graders in a small public school in a large city in Pennsylvania.
They hail from all corners of the city, which includes from many different neighborhoods and socio-economic backgrounds. They all share a devotion to our school and an honest love of reading--even those students who are reluctant readers are coming around during this unit!
My Project
I have picked out seventeen different titles for students to enjoy during our independent reading unit. Many of the books are already class favorites, where there is maybe one copy in the entire school--and we can't keep up with demand. Others titles include award-winning teen fiction, literary classics, graphic novels, with a few memoirs and biographies mixed in as well.
Learning is most authentic when students have the freedom to pursue what they are most interested in.
Unfortunately, most of my students don't have the economic luxury of going and buying a new book whenever they want it. Our classroom library will give them the variety they deserve--and next year's students, as well!
