My Students

Our classroom is all-inclusive with 20 children diverse in abilities as well as cultures. The goal of this project is to increase the students awareness of our differences while stressing our unity. We begin the school year assigned to teams but by the end of the year we are one, PreK-3.

We have many great moments in a PreK year but one of my favorites happened last year when we were ending one project and beginning another.

We had a tunnel and tent set-up for gross motor activities. One of my students went through the tunnel (he called it the Underground Railroad) and entered a space shuttle for an adventure in space. Maybe to follow the drinking gourd? I’m not sure but to me it validated why I need to offer more opportunities to explore science and social studies.

My Project

The goal of this project is to offer the students opportunities to apply the primary objectives – learning the alphabet as well as counting and recognizing numbers – to explore the subjects of geography, social studies and science. The items we are requesting include a PreK friendly globe as well as additional tools to enhance our block (social studies center) and science centers. Our access to these tools are limited for various reasons but PreK is the perfect hands-on stage to introduce many concepts. For instance, we will use the colored masking tape to create a grid on the floor (and in sand table) to explore positions and directions including the z axis. Sometimes, we need more than a piece of paper to understand a concept, especially when you are 4/5 years old.

Teaching is my second career.

I trained almost 30 years as a parent and aviation technical specialist before I received my education degree. I am able to apply knowledge from my previous career, such as how mazes look like electrical diagrams and schematics and constellations can be dot-to-dots. I now have the advantage to teach a concept I did not understand in high school, the Z-axis. Many of these children and capable of learning these concepts. The earlier we can introduce, the better. My students need the flashcards, music and globe to experience greetings from around the world. These items will be used during our morning carpet time.
