My students need funding for our trip to San Francisco to the Exploratorium, an iPad to build their technology skills, and sensory tools.
My students need sensory tools.
I want to provide my students with an enriched education. I want my classroom to have up-to-date technology that challenges them to learn new and exciting skills. I want to give my students the opportunity to go to the San Francisco Exploratorium and get a hands-on learning experience.
My class is a Mild/Moderate Kindergarten-Third Grade Special Day Class.
I have my students all day with the exception of Fine Arts and Physical Education. These students come from the highest poverty in our town. When they come to school, I need to be creating an enriched learning environment.
Last year, we took our kids to the San Francisco Exploratorium. This was the first time more than half of my students had seen the ocean. One of my second graders cried from the beautiful scenery. We ate lunch near the Golden Gate Bridge. They were able to see the famous bridge we had been studying. The look in their eyes that day was inspiring. It inspired me to dedicate my classroom into an environment that will give them opportunities they would not get anywhere else.
Our classroom does not have updated technology. Most of my students have never used an iPad or tablet. Common Core is forcing students to tap into technology knowledge. We need an iPad in order to facilitate these skills.
My Project
The field trip I'm asking donations for is the trip we look forward to all year. We do educational units on the history of San Francisco, the Gold Rush, the Golden Gate Bridge and the Science Exploratorium. These facts and units come to life in an unimaginable way when they finally get to see San Francisco in person. They are able to connect their lessons to real life.
I have the students for four consecutive years. My students who went last year have helped teach the lessons this year to our new students. It's amazing seeing their excitement about these landmarks and their previous knowledge. We are able to dig into a deeper knowledge about these subjects because they have been there and have a foundation to build upon. The iPad is to help us bridge the technology gap that my students have due to their poverty. They haven't had access to a tablet or iPad.
My students have special sensory needs. I'm asking for several tools that serve as necessary, calming tools.
I've seen the joy, awe and power of taking my students to San Francisco.
It gives them motivation to learn about these landmarks and the exhibits that they will experience on the trip. Giving my students an iPad will help us bridge a technology gap that my classroom is lacking. It will also support their test taking skills because tests are now taken on tablets. Sensory tools help my students to self monitor their emotions while keeping them relaxed and focused. Sensory tools help them learn.
