Hands-On Science Outdoors

My students need gardening tools, a digital microscope and slides, and a kit about environmental pollution and its effect on plants.

My Students

The best way to learn about the environment is to go outside. The best way to help our school learn about plants is to build and plant a sustainable garden. Thanks to Disney's Planet Challenge, our school is on its way to doing this. Now we need the tools to work and explore environment.

I teach a wonderful group of 5th grade students in a Southern California Title One school.

Over 48% of our students are eligible for the free/reduced lunch program. My students love to work on projects, especially when they are outdoors. We have been learning how to protect our watershed, and now we are focusing on how to create and grow a sustainable garden with native plants. Our project will help all the students and parents in our community, because we will be teaching them about sustainable gardening. We will be digging our soil, learning about how to grow plants, and in late Spring we will be eating our organic vegetables too.

My Project

As part of our Disney's Planet Challenge project, our classroom received funding to build five raised beds, add irrigation, and plant the beds with sustainable native plants. I am requesting gardening tools so my students can work together in building and creating our garden. We also need storage containers to hold our gardening tools. I have requested a digital microscope so my students can learn about and see the wonderful organisms that live in our soil and in our pond, stream, and ocean water. This digital microscope will be a wonderful addition to our investigations into both soil and water pollution. We will use the digital images in our PowerPoints that my students will create to share with students in other classrooms. The environmental testing kit and microscope slides I have requested will help my students understand pollution and the impact it has on our environment.

What a wonderful way to begin the New Year.

Not only will my students learn about how to create a sustainable garden, but they will be able to share their knowledge with students and parents so they can create sustainable gardens in our community. Please help us learn with hands-on materials how important it is to save and protect our environment.
