Hands-On Science and Social Studies for IB 4th Graders

My students need a set of books on ecosystems/landforms, a set of books on electricity, an Electricity Activity Tub, 4 Take-Apart Human Body Models, a set of science board games, a set of rocks, an electronic Around the World Fact Finder, a giant classroom globe, a variety of social studies board games, and a set of books on U.S. history.

My Students

My school is a high-needs, high-poverty International Baccalaureate school in North Carolina. I teach a great group of 4th graders who truly want to succeed academically.

Our rigorous IB program focuses on a "global perspective" approach to teaching and learning.

Due to staggering budget cuts this year, we are unfortunately very limited as far as our ability to purchase classroom supplies or supplementary materials. We have had a difficult time securing even basic supplies such as pencils and paper, let alone expensive books and games. The teachers at my school have spent a great deal of their own money this year in order to support our students, but there is only so much we can do on our own.

My Project

My class is requesting a variety of manipulatives, books, games, and visual aids in order to help us develop a stronger understanding of our six IB transdisciplinary themes. These materials will allow us to further explore integrated science and social studies topics such as the balance between living and nonliving things, the impact of electricity on our daily lives, ways in which people express themselves and how their voices transcend time, animal adaptations, leading a balanced lifestyle, immigration...etc. Please help my students reach their highest potential! They do not have many people rooting for them and they deserve to know that someone cares. These materials will give my future students the opportunity to explore how the world works for years to come.
