My Students

There is so much more to organ systems than the carefully color-coded illustrations in textbooks! The amazing complexity and interplay between cells, tissues, and organs only becomes apparent when you get a real look inside an organism.

My 7th grade students are rabidly curious and engaged when they are able to explore the material in a real-world capacity.

They come from a variety of backgrounds, but they all have a great interest in the way that life works. They attend a small, public charter school where textbook and lab material resources are in short supply, but we make up for it with donations of supplies and a brilliant "outdoor classroom" on the Haw River.

My Project

My students need six fetal pigs to dissect in their exploration of cells, tissues, organs, and organ systems. Students will be able to explore the many levels of organization in the body of an animal that is very close to that of humans. We will explore these levels through dissection and the observation of tissue samples through microscopes. These investigations will be connected to the workings of their own living body through labs that delve into the mechanisms of and connections between their cardiovascular, digestive, muscular, and skeletal systems. The pigs can also be used by the school's 6th, 8th, and high school biology classes.

A deep understanding of how the body works is by far the most useful topic that a student will learn in their science class.

The connections to health, medicine, cellular biology, and nutrition are countless. What can possibly be more engaging than an inquiry into how your own life works?
