Hands On Makes The Hardest Hurdles Handle-able!

My students need scissors, rulers, construction paper, markers and glue sticks in order to have better understanding of our science concepts using hands-on projects.

My Students

Think back to the most memorable thing you did throughout your education. Was it listening to a boring lecture and taking notes, or was it the excitement of an activity that brought out your kinesthetic (hands-on) side?

My students attend a Title I school in Oklahoma, which is ranked 48th in the quality of education and test scores across the country.

For many of our 7th graders, school is a second job, behind the daily battles that await them at home. I have never met people (let alone students) that were so caring and genuinely easy to love, and their passion for their peers, and learning is unbridled.

My Project

One activity my students loved most last year was an activity where they cut out different body organs and pasted it into their interactive notebook, and this is an activity I hope to integrate more, and throughout every unit. Using scissors and rulers, students will cut and match vocabulary terms, while drawing pictures of what the vocabulary word looks like to them. They will create foldables and other materials that can be glued into the notebooks that are used as a lifeline to their scientific knowledge. We can use the window markers to decorate our windows with the knowledge they have just learned, and do the same with fabric materials. In this manner, students will not have to dread science, waiting to take more notes each day, but rather can look forward to the exciting hands-on activities that are massively helping to grow their brain!
