Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Can you learn without motivation? My students need something tangible to hold and earn in order to focus and listen to instruction.
I serve 6 students that are on the autism spectrum in a self-contained class.
These students amaze and challenge me every day. I have a kindergartner, 2 first graders, 2 second graders, and a fourth grader in my class. They all love to learn and explore new materials and projects. My class learns best when they know that they are working toward something: whether it's time on the computer or the beanbag, or a chance to jump on the trampoline or play with a neat toy. Of the six students in my class, 2 of them are verbal. The other 4 are nonverbal (they can repeat words that they hear, but they do not use speech to communicate with anyone), and I am teaching them to communicate with the outside world using pictures.
My Project
I am requesting different types of sensory items to replace some worn-out items (koosh balls and rice bins) in the classroom and to also introduce some new materials and experiences to my students. As a motivation for them to use their communication books and reach out to my assistants and I, we have a box of treats and reinforcers that we must switch out regularly so the students can always find something new and interesting to work for. The items I am requesting can be used in several ways: I can use them as motivators for students to stay on task; the items can be used to encourage communication (ex. "I want the green ball." Or, "I want the soft bean bag."); they can be used to teach attributes such as size, shape, and texture in different lessons; and lastly, if a student gets stressed out, the therapy balls and rice can be used as tools to soothe the child.
The items that I am requesting for this sensory tool project can bring both curiosity and comfort to my students.
They will have opportunities to communicate and learn with different materials. I look forward to sharing photos and videos with donors so you can see firsthand the impact these items can have on the students.
