I serve nine students that are on the autism spectrum in a self-contained class. These students amaze and challenge me every day. I have a kindergartner, two first graders and six second graders in my class. These students will all stay with me for one to three years or until they join the regular education classroom. They all love to learn and explore new materials and projects. My class learns best when they know that they are working toward something: whether it's time on the computer or the beanbag, or a chance to jump on the trampoline or play with a neat toy. Of the nine students in my class, 3 of them are verbal. The others are nonverbal (they can repeat words that they hear, but they do not use speech to communicate with anyone), and I am teaching them to communicate with the outside world using pictures.
