This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"Rarely do we find men who willingly engage in hard, solid thinking. There is an almost universal quest for easy answers and half-baked solutions. Nothing pains some people more than having to think." Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
I teach an inquisitive group of energetic 2nd graders at an inner-city school.
More than 70% of my students come from economically challenged families. For the majority of my students, their financial difficulties don't allow them to have the same access to technology as the average students do. This means that technology tools (such as iPads) are essential learning tools that can bridge the gap between more privileged communities and MY students. They can do inquiry-based research on multicultural celebrations, important American heroes, and even videos of Civil Rights Heroes. All this amazing information we read about in social studies can be brought to life with the iPads.
My Project
In our social studies curriculum, we study how heroes from long ago and the recent past have made a difference our lives. By adding these iPads to our 2nd grade classroom, my students will have all the power to research and explore multiculturalism and civil rights heroes right at their fingertips!
These opportunities for my students, individually and in groups, to explore, research, write about, and to discuss key concepts in social studies will lead to improved critical thinking and reading skills.
My students will become independent, intentional, and self-directed learners. This a critical part of learning that is often neglected until high school or even college. I want my students to be inquisitive learners now!
