Area, perimeter, vertices, edges, faces, and nets are examples of geometry vocabulary words and concepts that third graders are expected to understand. Many of my students struggle with geometry due to the vocabulary and need hands-on resources to help them master basic geometry concepts.
"Children who develop a strong sense of spatial relationships and who master the concepts and language of geometry are better prepared to learn number and measurement ideas, as well as other advanced mathematical topics." I want to provide my students with a strong foundation in geometry to prepare them for real world applications and future academic success.
Geometry is an abstract concept for many of my students because they lack background knowledge. They have not experienced constructing and visualizing shapes. They mistake area for perimeter and edges for faces. My students need hands-on geometry practice to makes sense of the vocabulary, to describe attributes of shapes, and to grasp the relationship and distinction between area and perimeter.
My Project
Children learn so much more by doing! I would like to provide students with more hands-on learning opportunities to practice, review, and develop mastery of basic geometry concepts. The 3-D shapes tub will allow students to work with a partner to take a closer look at 3-D shapes. They will practice finding the faces, edges, and vertices of the shapes. They can compare and contrast the shapes easily because they will have the shapes right in their hands. The geometry match-up puzzles will allow students to practice geometry vocabulary because they will have to match a word with its picture and definition. There are 36 puzzles total that allow for individual and small group practice. The folding geometric shapes (nets) will allow students to explore 3-D shapes in both their solid and flat form. This will help students to identify the 2-D shapes that form the faces for 3-D shapes. Students will use the area tiles to calculate the area and perimeter of shapes they make.
