Hands-on Approach to Studying the Human Body

My students need the 17 dissection kits to be able to study the mammalian brain working in pairs, and they will read a novel about the historical use of the human body.

My Students

The class spends some time at the beginning participating in share time, which is a chance to share a recent experience or tell a joke. They then get to work listening to a short lecture, participating in a quick lab and doing a case study.

My honors anatomy class is a mixed class of mostly junior and seniors.

They are highly motivated students and they seem to respond best to hands-on learning. They are very diverse in their interests. It is mostly composed of females. The school is a large urban school with mixed socioeconomic groups.

My Project

They will participate in a sheep brain dissection to learn about the structure of a mammalian brain. They also will read the novel about the human body being used as a cadaver. It gives them a global and historical perspective of cadavers and how the study of the human body has evolved over time.

The dissection kits will give them a hands-on approach to learning about the brain.

It gives them a better perspective than doing a virtual dissection. Many of the students are interested in the medical field so they will be able to have a preview to what they will be studying in the future. Literacy is also an important component to all of my classes, so having access to this novel, "Stiff", will improve their reading and studying skills.
