Hand Drums for Middle School Choir

My students need hand drums for use in the general music classroom as well as accompanying choral concerts. These drums will allow another outlet for multicultural music.

My Students

I have always tried to incorporate instruments and movement into my choral classroom and students always enjoy using these methods to further their exploration of music. Because there are several kinds of learners I vary my techniques but I find that the more interactive the more growth is achieved

My students come from very diverse backgrounds, many of which involve being homeless or in a single parent household.

Despite their hardships however, they come to choir with an eagerness to share new experiences with their friends. It often appears that they are learning without their knowledge because of the lesson structure. I provide ample opportunities for them to teach each other and to get out of their seats. They are smart, hard working, passionate kids who have dealt with some really difficult things but they come back everyday with an eagerness to learn something new.

My Project

Frame drums provide another outlet for feeling the steady musical beat. In the Orff-Schulwerk process students feel the rhythm on their bodies first using body percussion like claps, leg pats, stomps, and snaps. It is then transferred to unhitched percussion instruments like drums, tambourines, wood blocks, cow bells, and maracas. This transference is accompanied by reading the rhythms on the musical staff and then reading notes on the musical staff. The final step is transferring the rhythm to pitched instruments or creating a melody to be sung. By the end of the process any learner (visual, kinesthetic, or auditory) can master the lesson. Hand drums are much easier to carry while moving as opposed to a tubano drum which can only be played while seated and stationary. There are also many different ways to play a hand drum depending on what culture we are studying and these techniques are simple to learn and master quickly.

This past summer I attended two music education workshops that completely transformed the way that I teach.

I now choose my repertoire not by what it can teach musically but how I can make it meaningful to the students. I have learned the importance of instruments and movement in the choral room to create more well rounded musicians and overall students. My classroom currently has very outdated technology and usable instruments. I am trying gradually to update both necessary elements.
