Imagine how difficult it would be to learn in a classroom without pencils, paper, or books. It is just as challenging to learn music without musical instruments!
Everyday I get the pleasure of teaching music to approximately 150 special needs students in grades kindergarten through eighth.
My students are diagnosed with Autism, ADHD, and other related disorders. Additionally, they are inner city kids that face the challenges associated with extreme poverty and broken homes. Despite all of their challenges they work hard to excel in school and function in society. Each of them truly is an inspiration to me! When I first arrived at our school the music room had little more than two cabinets full of an outdated music curriculum. Music class needs to be hands-on! The students need to make music, not just read about it from books. With their disabilities, most of my students also have speech impairments. This makes singing difficult for them, they benefit the most from activities that involve playing instruments. Through a more hands-on approach, my students are able to build confidence and find success in music class.
At the end of the school year I gave my students an exit survey. One of the questions asked them what they wanted to learn more of next year. Each and every student had very similar answers: "Guitars, trumpet, guitars, saxophone, guitars, guitars, guitars!" My students have a burning desire to play instruments, especially the guitar. We do not have any guitars at our school, and no budget to purchase them. The majority of my students cannot afford their own either. In September I want to offer a beginning guitar class. Eventually I would like to have a class set of 10 guitars and accessories. I am looking to acquire two guitars at a time, I believe that it is reasonable to raise this amount in the time that Donors Choose allows for each project.
These guitars will enable my students to explore many styles of music including traditional and jazz.
My students will develop both gross and fine motor skills through playing. They will also develop literacy skills as they learn to read music. These guitars will help them learn patience and concentration. Additionally, my students will learn about teamwork, and helping one another to achieve common goals, as they make music together.
