Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"As great scientists have said and as all children know, it is above all by the imagination that we achieve perception, and compassion, and hope."-Ursula K. LeGuin Providing our students with the opportunity to explore science through hands-on materials will open the door for many other things.

I have an amazing group of 3rd grade students, who are all eager to learn and succeed.

With testing and preparation for 4th grade the students are always working, studying and learning. When we come to a new Science unit I try to provide ample opportunities for the students to have fun, hands-on, creative experiments. This allows their imagination to grow and also provides them with different problems to create and solve. At the beginning of the year we acquired a small plastic fish tank that brought much excitement and many questions to the classroom. I have not only seen this pet fish (named Guarder) lead us through many science lessons, but it has also taught the students about responsibility. We have a thriving vegetable garden in our school that the students are always excited to plant for. We have just begun a unit on Plants and Living things. Having a new fish tank will provide many more opportunities and resources to learn through science!

My Project

The students will acquire responsibility and a sense of ownership. It will teach the concept of cooperation and lead to class discussions. It opens the door to experimentation, observation, imagination and much more. For my future students I would love to enhance our classroom tank and our Science program with the use of a larger tank. If provided with a tank, I would be able to add more fish, plants and other living things. With the use of this tank we will be able to learn even more about how certain plants and animals thrive in particular environments, while others struggle or cannot survive at all. We will also learn how living organisms interact with their setting through observation and modeling. Having a small environment such as a fish tank will allow us to observe living and non-living things interacting in a certain environment. The students will learn to classify living and non-living things and find similarities and differences between the tank and larger environments.

We live in an area where we are close to aquatic life.

It would be very beneficial to bring a small example of an ecosystem into our classroom. The students will be able to relate the information that will be learned to real life and their surroundings.
