This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Please, can we read a new book with you today?!" My students are constantly begging to have a variety of books to read during reading groups. They have the enthusiasm to truly soar in reading, but need the leveled readers to build the foundational skills great readers need.

My students attend a bilingual dual-immersion program.

Fifty-percent of their day is spoken entirely in English, while the other fifty-percent is presented in Spanish. Many of the students are Hispanic English language learners in a high-need community. These 1st graders are excited about learning and growing as readers. They are beginning to make connections in reading to the beautiful world around them.

My Project

I need more leveled reading sets to expand the guided reading instruction in the classroom. The students will be able to grow and flourish as readers. Currently, the selection of books is severely limited to 5 books per level. Students are not always ready to move on after such small exposure. In such limited selections, students often do not find a topic they are interested in. More books per level will provide students with a variety of topics and more opportunities to practice at the appropriate level.

Students will become more proficient and engaged readers. They need more experiences with books on their level to grow. By giving books, you will support the students (and future students) in becoming bilingually literate members of society.
