Growing Readers, Growing Learners!

My students need new class sets of books ("The Giver", "The Invention of Hugo Cabret", and "Hunger Games", so that we can spend the rest of the year reading and learning!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember reading the first book that got you hooked on reading? Most of my students have yet to read that book, but that is a problem that we are going to remedy this semester!

My students are amazing 16, 17, and 18 year old young adults.

They are in my 11th and 12th grade Special Day English classes. My kids have learning disabilities and/or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and therefore require many modifications in order to successfully learn and grow. Our school's population is 60% African American and 40% Latino, and my classroom reflects that. The majority of the students at this school are qualified for free or reduced lunch, and we are therefore a Title I school. My students overcome insurmountable obstacles on a daily basis to actually make the effort and attempt to earn a high school diploma. My students experience oppression on a variety of levels due to the fact that they have special needs, are racial minorities, and come from low-income families. These kids deserve the very best from their school and teachers and this grant will hopefully make us one step closer to getting there.

My Project

I have requested three sets of books for my classes to read this year and for the years to come. The Giver was the first book that I ever read and could not put down, and I have the feeling that it will do the same for my students. Both The Invention of Hugo Cabret and Hunger Games are wildly popular in classrooms across the nation now and both have been turned into movies. It is so difficult to get students with special needs and attention deficits invested in a book, and these two are known for turning those who loathe books into avid readers.

I truly believe that these class sets of books are going to lead to transformational change in my students.

With my students graduating in a year or less, I have a limited amount of time to turn them into book lovers. I am convinced that the Giver, the Invention of Hugo Cabret, and the Hunger Games are the books that will spark the fire.
