My Students
Finding your own space in a high school is hard; finding your own reading space to enjoy a good book is even harder. That's our goal---to give students their own individual reading spaces to promote the enjoyment of reading.
Our students are 9th through 12th graders that have grown up in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia.
Many of them live in rural areas and/or on farms. As a whole, they are reluctant readers. We are hoping to change that! Thus far, the new reading pods have brought many students into the library to read. I'd love to see this grow! We've build "cubbies" for individual space; now we just need new seating. We currently have some bean bags (which our students love), but these are already showing a low lifespan.
My Project
We spent the summer building reading pods with plywood boards and brackets. I am not a natural builder, but I knew what I wanted my students to experience in the library. I wanted them to have a space in which they could sit and read without feeling crowded or overwhelmed. I bought some bean bags to get us started, and the students love them! Our problems are 1) we've outgrown what we already have, and 2) the bean bags are not holding up to the amount of use they are receiving. I would like to replace some bean bag chairs with comfortable armchairs that will last many school years.

I love the change I see in them which was created by simply offering them their own spaces to enjoy their books. I'm hoping to continue to provide the students with reading space and to increase the amount of students who will use the reading pods.
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
