My Students

"Children are not limited in what they can do when they have mathematical skills because to a mathematician, 'real life' is a special case." Unknown My incoming special education 7th and 8th graders are ready to build a strong mathematical foundation for high school and beyond!

At my school, 97% of students are low-income, 35% of students speak limited English, 24% of students are Diverse Learners (Special Education) and 100% of the students I work with LOVE using Donors Choose supplies to enhance their education.

My students are significantly below grade level in mathematics and they are not daunted by the challenge of learning grade level work while mastering foundational skills.

My Project

My special education students love hands on materials and collaborative learning. Every day, they learn 8th grade mathematics based on Common Core State Standards. Through center work, we also spend a lot of time spiral reviewing to make sure they remember the foundational skills that will help them quickly master 7th and 8th grade math. Let's set them up for high school success..and beyond! In daily centers, students will review and explore mathematical concepts such as measurement, time, money, fractions, geometry, algebraic thinking and much more! They will engage in conversations using rich, mathematical vocabulary as they are led by the Explain Your Reasoning math prompts.

Through this project, students will measurably see their confidence and abilities soar as they reinforce and explore mathematical standards in small group work.

Their work with these materials will best prepare them for grade level work and math problems they encounter in everyday life. As students learn to discuss math ideas in groups, they will be able to justify their reasoning in any class or setting.
