Graphic Novels: Engaging Minds in the Study of Our Past

My students need graphic novels including Trinity, March and Vietnamerica to help them engage with the past and increase their literacy.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are eager to learn and creatively talented. I am hoping that by appealing to their love of the arts, that they will come to love history as much as I do.

My students all belong to a Media Arts academy appreciate the creative arts.

They want to learn, but many lack the literacy skills to read documents or even the school text - these graphic novels could both help them better understand the past and gain both historical literacy and basic literacy skills.

My Project

I hope to use the graphic novels as anchors to historical units and to use them as the main source of inquiry (gradually adding related documents) instead of using the textbook. The idea is to relate everything we do within the unit back to our source material, but to also use the source material as a launch pad to make new inquiries into the topic.

Our school does not have a school library, rather a digital library in a media center.

It is my belief that my students need to be engaged in reading daily. Not many will take advantage of the digital library, and still fewer will go outside of school to seek material to read. These graphic novels will spark my students' enthusiasm for reading, improve their literacy, and engage them in the study of our past!
