Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Have you ever read something like this: "omg, idk ur talkin bout i gtg. ttyl." and wondered if someone was speaking a foreign language? Today the Internet and other forms digital communication have crippled the way our young people write and talk. Students need to learn that grammar is alive & well.

English grammar is an endangered species on the verge of extinction at the hands (mainly thumbs) of our youth.

My students need a document camera and projector to increase the frequency, efficiency, and effectiveness of grammar lessons. Like most kids their age, they love to text, chat, tweet, facebook, blog, and do any other type of social networking the Internet creates. Unfortunately, this constant connection to the digital world has caused a disconnect with the grammar of the real world. Though our school is college prep, most have yet to grasp the finer nuances of situation appropriate language. As a result, some feel it is perfectly acceptable to turn in a research paper with short hand text like "til" or "bout." At their core, all of our students want to be the best scholars they can be regardless of how near or far they are in relation to that goal.

My Project

I posted part of this project once before. I hope to get it funded in sections. The Epson projector will allow me to use project the notes from my class session on the board. Also, it will allow me to use the "track changes" section of MS Word to project real time corrections I make to digital copies of the student's work. This way the students will be able to see editing take place as it will on their computer, not just red marks on a paper.

Copies, toner, and paper are scarce at our school.

Teachers are strongly advised to only use copies for core subject content. I feel it is essential that the students have a grammar lesson every day, but grammar is a skill by 8th grade that students are expected to have acquired. The topic is therefore not core content. Without a grammar workbook for each student or access to adequate copies, the topic is hard to cover frequently and effectively.
