Gracious Graphic Novel Readers!

My students need copies of two different graphic novels to complete class sets for our reading classes. They need 17 copies of "Pedro & Me" and 10 copies of "A.D.New Orleans After the Deluge."

My Students

Do you remember when you read a book that made you love reading? Graphic novels have changed our once reluctant students into voracious readers. By completing our class sets of these two graphic novels, we will be able to use these texts for entire class units.

My students are placed into a freshman level reading class to support their burgeoning reading skills.

Students come in with an apprehension towards reading and we make sure that they leave the class with a love of books! Students are taught various reading strategies in order to encourage their love of reading and engagement in school. We use multiple young adult texts to increase their interest in reading and challenge our students' ideas about the world. The school is a large urban high school and the class attempts to make students feel as though they are an integral and necessary part of their new school environment. Graphic novels have been a very successful way to bring out our reluctant readers interest in reading and social justice issues!

My Project

The 10 copies of AD: New Orleans After the Deluge and 17 copies of Pedro and Me will complete a class set for ten 9th grade reading classes. Last year, many students read these books during our literature circles unit. These students were extremely taken by the power of the text, the amazing artwork within it, and the social justice issues presented through these non-fiction graphic novels. Through AD: New Orleans After the Deluge, we can confront the injustices that occurred during Hurricane Katrina as seen through the stories of survivors. Pedro and Me will teach students to confront their own misconceptions about homosexuality and AIDS. These texts would allow us to continue to make connections to their lives, make connections to the world, ask questions, and campaign against injustice through various class projects.

You will make it possible for my students to understand the power of storytelling, confronting injustice, and fighting stereotypes.

You will increase their desire to become lifelong readers through these brilliant graphic novels that help students realize the importance of other voices, as well as the importance of their own.
