My Students

Khaled Hosseini, author of *The Kite Runner,* wrote, "Writing for me is largely about rewriting." We all know that writing is hard and that it takes a lot of work. So do my students. Unfortunately, not all of them have access to a computer, a crucial tool in the revision process.

As teachers, we can tell our students to care about their writing, and we can remind them to look closely at our suggestions.

We can extol the importance of solid writing conventions, the necessity of precise grammar and mechanics. But without a computer, students cannot put in the dedicated time and effort needed to become stronger writers. A huge inequity therefore develops between the computer-haves and the computer-have nots. One student can spend hours editing her essay in the comfort of her own living room, while another must negotiate a bus ride or two to travel to the public library before it closes. My students want to improve as writers but have to spend their time finding a computer rather than using that same time to tighten their prose, to forge a stronger argument, to add precise evidence to substantiate their claim.

My Project

It is my goal to get 30 Chromebooks for my classroom, starting here on DonorsChoose. It might take a while, but I am committed to the cause. The Chromebook is a perfect computer for my students because it is inexpensive and integrates nicely with Google Docs, the most powerful teacher-student revision machine. A few years ago, I began using Google Docs to deepen the revision process. It was revolutionary. Students received feedback and made changes quickly, and they could see their growth as writers take hold on the computer screen. I even found professional writers in the community to become online writing mentors. My students would send their drafts via Google Docs to their mentors, who offered excellent feedback that my students valued deeply.

All of this -- more time to write, more chances to revise, and more opportunities to network with professional writers -- is possible with a Chromebook.

I am hopeful that you will help me begin my campaign for 30 Chromebooks for my classroom. If I am able to get the tools to help my students write better, I am confident that I can support them to achieve their goals.
