Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Reading a good book can transport you to magical places, like a spectacular chocolate factory or to a battlefield during the Revolutionary War. My students have had their imaginations captured by great stories and are asking for more!
My students are from a Title I school.
My fifth grade bilingual (English language learners) classroom had some very reluctant readers at the beginning of the year. We started off with a modern historical novel (George Washington's Socks) and with a classic (James and the Giant Peach) for guided reading. These books proved to be challenging, but, my students rose to the occasion and embraced the challenge. Both books have sequels, and they keep asking why we can't read them. Our school does not have class sets of these two titles, and I've told them that, but they keep insisting on reading the sequels!
As English language learners, they have been motivated to challenge their own reading ability by reading novels they once never would have touched because they weren't in Spanish. Some of my students are even reading higher level novels in English on their own, but are having a difficult time fully comprehending the novels to their fullest.
My Project
The means for my students to challenge themselves and build both their reading and language skills are class sets of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and George Washington's Spy. Each class set copy has the ability to inspire my students to grow their knowledge base while mixing both classic and modern literature.
The class sets of books will be used for conducting guided reading workshops. We will be reading them as a whole group, with extension activities that enhance and clarify comprehension and vocabulary development.
We will also use the books during readers' workshop. In readers' workshop, students will be assigned roles that correlate with the reading. They will then share collaboratively with their group. In this manner they are being challenged to think. This method allows for me to give my students the foundational skill set for them to comprehend the story while still encouraging them to continue to read interesting, but challenging, novels.
Providing my students with a mixture of modern and classic novels will entice them to read more and continue to develop their language skills.
Teaching students not only how to comprehend a novel, but also how to read for the sheer pleasure of reading will be something no one can take from them. These novels will only be the start of a lifetime love of reading.
