My students need a squoosh chair and pod pillow for positioning and the bag o balls and other textures items for input in our multi-sensory environment.
The multi-sensory environment will allow the student to explore and experience at their own level in an artificial environment created to stimulate the senses. The stimulation can be controlled and presented in isolation or combination, it is for either active or passive interaction.
Our (InD) Intellectually Disabled and (ASD) Autistic students are mostly non verbal, some are non ambulatory and have significant problems in redirecting their behavior when unable to communicate a want or need.
In the ASD population, frustration in the inability to have control often leads to behavior outburst. The therapy team, behavior team, and teachers are working in collaboration to teach these students self- regulating techniques.
Our InD population is unable to explore the environment on their own due to their physical and intellectual limitations, therefore their sensory system is extremely affected.
Our school is an exceptional student center where focus is to prepare our students to be independent and productive in their daily lives and communities. We provide a variety of educational services for students ages 3 to 22 who have Intellectual Disabilities and Autism Spectrum Disorder.
My Project
The cushion chair and pod pillow, will provide alternative seating for our ambulatory and non ambulatory students during leisure and relaxation. The alternative seating will facilitate input to the students senses in a non-instructed approach and promote self-regulating techniques.
The touchable textures, sensory ball pack, glitter tubes, bag o balls, twilight seat turtle and butterflies carpets will provide a multi-sensory stimulating environment that includes tactile, visual and proprioceptive input.
The interactivity with all these items empowers students to take control over their environment, develops cause and effect, develops motor skills and promotes independence.
This project will provide an opportunity for students to explore and encourage activity in a multi- sensory environment.
It will also provide activities that promote success, facilitate various types of communicative interactions and self regulating behaviors that our students need in order to experience the joy of life and learning.
